In August 2016, Sabine Lee and Bob McKelvey made a preparatory visit to Vietnam to prepare the Wellcome Trust-funded pilot project on Vietnamericans in Vietnam and in the US.

With the help of a US-based organisation Amerasians Without Borders, they located many Amerasians who are still living in Vietnam and they visited several of them and their families in and around Ho Chi Minh City.

The visit also facilitated making contact with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, and it was possible to establish a collaboration with the local Department of Anthropology. As a result of this, Dr Truong Thi Thu Hang will join the project, and it is hoped that students from USSH will contribute to the in-country data collection and the delivery of the research more generally.
